Structural modeling, seismic analysis and executive structural design
The building has a resistant reinforced concrete frame scheme. with a regular plan formed by continuous spans with variable center distance between 2.60 and 4.80 meters. The longer side of the structure measures 33.80 meters (9 spans) while the smaller side is 12.60 meters (3 spans). The structure is spread over 6 floors above ground and a basement. The design philosophy adopted is aimed at reducing the “demand” for strength and stiffness of the structure by adopting the seismic isolation technique that does not involve reinforcement and stiffening of existing elements; this is ensured by the introduction, at the top of the pillars of the basement of the building, of special insulators called “friction pendulum”. The intervention involves the construction of a new foundation below the existing one which will be suitably enlarged and equipped with hydraulic jacks. Through these devices, contrasting with the lower foundation, the building will be raised and the previously mentioned isolation devices will be positioned in the gap between the two foundation levels.
